Pleural disease is a condition that affects the lining of the lungs — known as the pleura. In Australia, it’s most often linked to asbestos exposure.

While pleural disease is not cancer, it is an important signal of previous exposure and can affect breathing and lung function. For many people, it’s the first sign that their contact with asbestos has impacted their health.

This article explains what pleural disease is, how asbestos causes it, what symptoms to watch for, and what support is available.

What is the Pleura?

The pleura is a thin, protective membrane that wraps around each lung and lines the inside of the chest wall. It has two layers:

  • The visceral pleura covers the lungs
  • The parietal pleura lines the chest cavity

Between these layers is a small space filled with fluid. This helps your lungs move smoothly when you breathe.

How does asbestos cause Pleural disease?

When asbestos fibres are inhaled, they can become lodged in the pleura. Over time, this irritation can lead to inflammation, thickening, and scarring of the pleural lining.

This damage doesn’t happen overnight. It may take 10 to 40 years (or even longer) after exposure for pleural disease to appear.

Common types of asbestos-related Pleural disease

There are several types of pleural disease associated with asbestos exposure:

  • Pleural plaques: The most common form. These are areas of thickened tissue on the pleura. They don’t usually cause symptoms but are a clear marker of asbestos exposure.
  • Diffuse pleural thickening: A more extensive scarring of the pleura that can restrict lung expansion and cause breathlessness.
  • Benign asbestos-related pleural effusion: A build-up of fluid between the pleural layers. It may cause chest discomfort and breathlessness and sometimes comes and goes.

None of these are cancerous, but they are important to monitor. Some forms may affect quality of life, and all suggest a need for regular follow-up.

Symptoms to watch for

Many people with pleural plaques have no symptoms at all, and only discover the condition after a routine X-ray or health check.

When symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Reduced lung capacity or effort tolerance

If symptoms change or worsen over time, it’s important to seek medical advice.

How is Pleural disease diagnosed?

If you’ve worked with asbestos or think you’ve been exposed, your doctor may recommend:

  • Chest X-rays or CT scans to detect plaques or thickening
  • Lung function tests to measure breathing capacity
  • A full occupational history to assess potential asbestos exposure

In most cases, a combination of imaging and history is enough to make a diagnosis.

Is Pleural disease a sign of cancer?

Pleural disease caused by asbestos is usually non-cancerous. However, it can signal that someone has been significantly exposed, and this carries an increased risk of developing:

  • Asbestosis (lung scarring)
  • Mesothelioma (a rare cancer of the pleura)

That’s why regular monitoring is important. Detecting changes early can make a significant difference.

If you have been diagnosed with pleural disease, you may be eligible for support through:

  • Your state’s workers compensation authority
  • Occupational health screening programs
  • Ongoing check-ups with your GP or a respiratory specialist
