We are excited and proud to announce that the new consensus-based GUIDELINES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF PLEURAL MESOTHELIOMA IN AUSTRALIA is now available.
The last guidelines were published by ADRI (as we were back then) in 2013, and much has changed in the evidence base and care landscape over the past 13 years. These latest clinical practice guidelines will now provide an essential reference for Australian medical practitioners, nurses and other allied health professionals and aims to ensure that all people affected by mesothelioma receive the highest standard of care, regardless of where they live in the community.
ADDRI assembled a national committee of Australia’s leading mesothelioma experts, led by Chair Professor Sonja Klebe and ADDRI Academic and Research Director A/Prof Anthony Linton, spanning the fields of epidemiology, radiology, pathology, palliative care, medical oncology, medicolegal, survivorship and consumers. Everyone came together with the shared purpose to provide patients and colleagues with guidance and support when it is most needed. We thank all contributors for their expertise, guidance and commitment over the two-year development process. In particular, we wish to acknowledge and thank our members with lived experience, who ensured that we never lost sight of that shared goal.
The guidelines cover topics from initial symptom presentation all the way through to end-of life considerations including diagnosis staging, treatment options, compensation, genetic counselling for family members and palliative care. Even with a world class health system like Australia, misdiagnosis of mesothelioma cases continues to be a problem. Given the need to reduce misdiagnoses, the importance of these new guidelines is clear.
Thank you to icare NSW and the Australian Government Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency for their funding and support of this significant project.
ADDRI acknowledges and thanks the Committee Members for their expertise and their commitment to bring this vital project to life.
