Help advance silicosis research

The Asbestos and Dust Diseases Research Institute (ADDRI) is currently recruiting people diagnosed with silicosis.

By donating a small blood sample, you can contribute to important research focused on improving prevention, monitoring and future treatment strategies for silicosis.

Who can participate?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Have been diagnosed with silicosis
  • Are able to provide informed consent
  • Are willing to donate a blood sample for research purposes

Participation is entirely voluntary.

What does participation involve?

  • A single blood collection, approximately 45mL
  • The appointment usually takes around 15 minutes
  • Blood is collected by a trained and experienced health professional
  • Collections take place at ADDRI in Concord, NSW

To help reduce any logistical or financial barriers, cab charge assistance may be available if you are travelling to ADDRI for your appointment. This assistance is provided solely to support access and is not a payment for participation.

Before you decide whether to participate, you will receive a detailed Participant Information Sheet explaining the study. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the research with a member of our team before providing written informed consent.

When are collections taking place?

Blood collections are being conducted by appointment. Our team will work with you to arrange a suitable time.

What happens to the blood samples

  • Processing: Blood is separated into components (plasma, serum, cells) within hours of collection.
  • Secure storage: Samples are stored in special freezers at –80°C at ADDRI, under strict monitoring and back-up systems to ensure long-term preservation.
  • Privacy protected: Each sample is labelled with a unique code, not names or personal identifiers. Only authorised staff can link the code back to the participant’s details.

Why is this research important?

Your blood samples will enable scientists to better understand the disease and find better ways to prevent and treat silicosis – ultimately helping future generations.

This study has been approved by the Ethics Review Committee (CRGH Zone) of the Sydney Local Health District.
