Silicosis and dust-related diseases

Welcome to the International e-Toolkit for the Elimination of Silica-related Diseases.

This section of the international e-toolkit provides information, resources and practical guidance to support the prevention of exposure to respirable crystalline silica and the elimination of silica-related diseases. From developing a National Silica Profile and strengthening occupational health surveillance systems to training materials on the recognition, diagnosis and prevention of silicosis and other silica-related conditions, this online resource brings together global knowledge, evidence and expertise that can be adapted to any country context.

Respirable crystalline silica is generated during activities such as mining, quarrying, tunnelling, construction, stone benchtop fabrication, and the manufacturing of bricks, tiles and other silica-containing materials. Exposure to silica dust can cause serious and irreversible diseases, including silicosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), kidney disease and autoimmune disorders. These diseases are entirely preventable through effective exposure control, monitoring, regulation and worker education.

Recent global estimates indicate that hundreds of thousands of workers continue to develop silica-related diseases each year, with silicosis and silica-attributable lung cancer remaining significant causes of occupational illness and death worldwide. This e-toolkit supports governments, employers, workers, health professionals and other stakeholders in implementing evidence-based strategies to prevent exposure, protect workers’ health and work towards the elimination of silica-related diseases.
